Exsufflicate – Gary Glauber

The bully deflects
slings & arrows
of a nation torn asunder,
downplays hatred
risen from its hiding place,
and plays loose & fast
with laws that govern
a once proud democracy.
Hello blusterous bloviate,
farewell peace of mind.
Complacency has no place
in this land of new normal,
where political favors undermine
practicality of experience
& thin skin incites
threats to first amendment rights.
It’s not right, & even
the fake news agrees.
We cannot dismiss
lies that comfort,
locker room swagger
that tells us how great
it all will soon be.
It’s the emperor’s old clothes,
pettiness as diversion,
plans without details,
marketing in plain sight,
rhetoric mistaken for salvation,
a phony bill of goods
for which we all will pay
clearly & dearly.
No place to hide,
as we fight desires
to look away, to excuse
this sideshow incredulity
that sickens & disturbs,
echoing sad lessons
of inconceivable history.
Farewell tranquility,
goodbye indivisibility
along with liberty
& justice for all.
